Romain Taupenot suggested his 2022s show some of the energy and salinity of 2020 but are less concentrated with more red fruit character. They also have the charm of the 2019s, but with higher acid and greater freshness. Whilst the Corton Rognet tipped in at 13.9° the rest of the range were all between 13-13.5°. Romain is typically using 25% new oak for the village wines and 30-35% for the 1er crus.

“Tight hedgerow strawberries, crushed stones, and wafts of dry earth, pot pourri and herb salt. Focussed, sappy and sinuous in the mouth, but generous too with warm, spiced redberry compote dominating, even covering the extended, energetic, stony tannins."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

What the critics say:

94-96/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Bright, attractive crimson purple. Not as explosive as it might be on the nose, a little more discreet. Then the fruit does absolutely swell on the palate, rediscovering the strawberries and cream aspect of this vineyard, with adequate acidity and some fine tannins. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023."

93-95/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a beautiful bouquet of red and black fruit and pastille-like purity that blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-bone tannins. It is cohesive and silky smooth, perhaps requiring more grip on the back end. But a very, very pretty Charmes-Chambertin. "

17/20Matthew Hayes, Jancis Robinson

"Mid cherry. Sweet red fruits on the nose, with raspberry depth. Not as unctuous as other Charmes tasted today. Slightly restrained, slightly more sober. Concentrated and balanced."
