Frédéric is increasingly emerging as one of the most talented young winemakers in the Côte d'Or. He makes the wines for his father Michel Magnien’s eponymous domaine, whilst also making wine under his own negociant label, sourcing fruit from some exceptional vineyards across the Cote de Nuits.
Allen Meadows notes he has become “arguably the leading specialist in Burgundy in the use of amphorae... others, such as Dujac, Pousse d'Or and Jean-Marie Fourrier, are experimenting with them as well though Magnien has made them an essential part of his approach…. Magnien believes the amphorae better preserve the freshness and they obviously do not mark the wines with toast or vanilla characteristics”.
Drinking window: 2024 - 2040
What the critics say:
"An ultra-fresh if restrained nose grudgingly offers up its combination of various dark berries, cool earth and a hint of herbal tea. There is again a really lovely texture to the vibrant and supple middleweight flavors that retain very good definition on the bitter pit fruit, sneaky long and balanced finish that displays the hallmark youthful austerity of a classic Clos de Vougeot."
