This wine is offered En Primeur, with an est. delivery in spring 2024.

Founded over hundred years ago, Georges Lignier has some of the greatest vineyards in and around Morey-Saint-Denis. Jasper Morris observes “one of the strengths of the 16ha domaine is to have mature vineyards… replanted systematically in the 1950s with good vine material, not clones.” The domaine is led by Benoit Stehly, nephew of Georges Lignier, who worked for a decade alongside his uncle, before assuming control of the work in both the vineyard and the cellar in 2008.

Benoit firmly believes that this vineyard best expresses the true character of Morey Saint Denis, and as the biggest owner of the Grand Cru, you’d expect nothing less! Apparently the church that owned Clos de la Roche was more influential than the one that owned Clos Saint Denis hence its elevated status. However he believes Clos de la Roche more closely resembles Mazoyeres Chambertin (which interestingly Romain Taupenot is always keen to suggest should be called Mazoyeres Saint Denis) and alongside Clos Vougeot and Chambertin these are the ‘powerful, masculine’ Grand Crus. Meanwhile Clos Saint Denis, Clos des Lambrays and Musigny are the ‘more elegant, feminine’ Grand Crus.

What the critics say:

95/100Christy Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin

"Herbal spice, tea leaves and boysenberries burst from the glass. Resolutely concentrated, the tannins feel gentle and fluffy against the voluminous burst of ripe fruit. High-toned acidity focuses this firebrand of wine. There is a generous 1.5 hectares here, and Stehly has delivered a 2022 that is unusually open and charming wine at this stage."

92-94/100William Kelley, Wine Advocate

"Offering up aromas of cherries, sweet red berries, plums and peonies, the 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and charming, with good depth at the core, supple tannins, lively acids and a long, saline finish. Reflecting its origins without artifice, this is an honest, age-worthy Burgundy produced from a 1.49-hectare parcel of this terrific vineyard."
