Romain Taupenot suggested his 2022s show some of the energy and salinity of 2020 but are less concentrated with more red fruit character. They also have the charm of the 2019s, but with higher acid and greater freshness. Whilst the Corton Rognet tipped in at 13.9° the rest of the range were all between 13-13.5°. Romain is typically using 25% new oak for the village wines and 30-35% for the 1er crus.

“From a parcel of 40-year-old vines, Romain says that Corton really needs to picked when at the perfect level of maturity – if underripe the wine just doesn’t deliver but overripe it loses all pretensions to nobility.
A well-delineated, lifted nose of salted meat, framboise and polished berries, with a deft floral component. The palate is well-centred, with a mouthfilling core of dense but satiny red fruits, anise and baking spices. Tannins show impressive fineness. This is a good example of why Corton is worth getting excited about in 2022."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

What the critics say:

94-96/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Dense crimson purple. There is bright dark red fruit on the nose, a sense of precision, then building in volume further back on the palate. A very good oak complement, and excellent length, in fact this keeps stretching out further behind. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. *****"

93-95/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with confit-like red fruit, touches of blood orange coming through with time, and an underlying mineralité that will be more present once in the bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture and moderate depth. It is quite saline towards the finish, which feels refined with just the right amount of sapidity. Excellent."

17/20Matthew Hayes, Jancis Robinson

"Mid ruby. Red fruits – cherries, redcurrants and raspberry. Very fresh with cut white flowers, too. Rounded fruit and lots of freshness. This wears its appellation lightly. No massive Corton character or hard tannins. Elegant and lightly concentrated. ‘Great performer in hot vintages’, Romain Taupenot says. ’A Corton from the Côte de Nuits.’"
