This wine is offered En Primeur, with an est. delivery late 2024/early 2025.

Introduced through his good friend Pierre Duroché, Magnien’s style of wines is nearer to Dugat-Py, in terms of richness, power and density.

Volumes here were only 15% up on 2021 which Charles puts down to “old vines and no whites”. After ten years experimenting with different barrels (makers, forests, toast levels, grain etc) he is very happy with the oak profile he has settled on for his wines. It is certainly a subject on which he is keen to expound although it is encouraging to record that, in these solar vintages, he uses less new oak as believes the warmth encourages too much extraction. Overall, Charles is keen to extract less, minimising punch downs, and seeking instead an equality between longevity and harmony.

"Deep red cherry nose, touch of marzipan, blood orange, dark earth, brooding and primal. Palate is dryly rich, powerful and succulent, but juicy acidity and well covered, chiselled tannins give both definition and drive all the way to a smoky, saline finish. Broad attack but tapers to a long finish, that waves you off."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

What the critics say:

93-95/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has the ripest and most sensual of Magnien's cuvees on the nose, adorned with lush red cherry, raspberry and light fig scents. There's a soupçon of exoticism in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite fleshy in the mouth with good grip and density. There is more horsepower even when contrasted against the Ruchottes-Chambertin. Lingers wonderfully on the finish. Excellent. "

93-95/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Bright mid purple. Served after Ruchottes because there is clearly a greater volume of fruit here, fills the mouth well, more on the raspberry side, with a little fresh white pepper behind, and medium plus depth. Does it quite have the grip of a great Cazetiers? Certainly it is a very good one. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023."
