This wine is offered En Primeur, with an est. delivery late 2024/early 2025.

Introduced through his good friend Pierre Duroché, Magnien’s style of wines is nearer to Dugat-Py, in terms of richness, power and density.

Volumes here were only 15% up on 2021 which Charles puts down to “old vines and no whites”. After ten years experimenting with different barrels (makers, forests, toast levels, grain etc) he is very happy with the oak profile he has settled on for his wines. It is certainly a subject on which he is keen to expound although it is encouraging to record that, in these solar vintages, he uses less new oak as believes the warmth encourages too much extraction. Overall, Charles is keen to extract less, minimising punch downs, and seeking instead an equality between longevity and harmony.

"From vines that range from forty years old right back to a parcel planted in 1915, including the well-regarded ‘En Champs’ lieu dit. Spicy, earthy, apothecary and forest floor notes jostle with tight red cherries and baking spices. Palate is juicy and slightly darker-fruited, with plums and black cherries, the tannins broad-shouldered but tapering to a stony, saline finish. For all its intensity this a pleasingly moderate 13.2%."

What the critics say:

90-92/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from eight parcels from 40 years old to some planted in 1915. Always one of my favorite cuvees from Magnien, this is more defined and energetic than the regular Gevrey, offering Morello cherries, strawberries and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a mixture of red and black fruit, supple in texture. It is not a concentrated Gevrey but feels very cohesive towards the finish. Give this puppy a couple of years in bottle."

90-92/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Medium ruby purple. I like the nose here more than the straight Gevrey and the Bourgogne because the fruit seems to be filling out more. This is what I expected. The fruit remains precise but there is enough of it to cover the bone structure. A pretty and perfumed strawberry finish with good length. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: November 2023."
