From the elevated Clarendon vineyard in McLaren Vale, Hickinbotham's 2021 The Nest Cabernet Franc is a beautifully lifted and vibrant take on this often under-appreciated grape. There's a real clarity to The Nest—it’s aromatic, medium-bodied, and full of charm, offering a refreshing counterpoint to some of the region’s bolder reds.

First planted back in 1971, Hickinbotham Vineyard sits high in the hills of Clarendon, at the northern tip of McLaren Vale—a cooler pocket that brings freshness and finesse to the fruit. Originally dry-farmed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, the site has long been a go-to for some of Australia’s top names, supplying grapes for iconic wines for decades.

In 2012 Hickinbotham began bottling under its own name. Under the guidance of winemakers Christopher Carpenter and Peter Fraser, along with viticulturist Michael Lane, the estate has gone from quiet legend to a benchmark for McLaren Vale elegance.

What the critics say:

94/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2021 The Nest Cabernet Franc is beautifully textured. I know I usually start with aromas then flavors, but I tasted this after smelling it for a while, and the tannins are surely the most alluring part about this wine; they're finely gravelly, gritty, chewy and pliable and extend out through the finish, beyond the cassis and cocoa, beyond the raspberry and bramble. They beckon for another sip. Done. I like it, and it will cellar well. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
