This richly textured, almost Burgundian Chardonnay from renowned New Zealand producer Kumeu River is an excellent addition to their portfolio of award-winning wines. This Single Vineyard wine from their Coddington Vineyard has a real presence – richly textured, but with refined elegance.
Expect concentrated ripe stone fruits and caramelised hazelnuts balanced by bright acidity and a crystalline minerality that nods its head to the surrounding Tasman sea. Utilising indigenous yeasts with extended lees ageing and malolactic fermentation, the Coddington Single Vineyard is a masterful expression of Chardonnay from a monumental winemaking team.
It will pair beautifully with creamy chicken dishes, or try it with a mild Chicken Makhani for something a bit different!
Drinking window: 2026 - 2035
What the critics say:
"The complexity and flintiness are so enticing, with sliced apples, lemons, minerals and gunpowder. Full-bodied, dense and intense, with subtle brioche, cooked lemon and apple notes. Racy and steely but with richness underneath. Some lemongrass. So complex. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
"Sturdy, dry, burgundian nose. Very textural start with very slight oiliness towards the end. Already very broachable with a tiny hint of lemon cough sweets on the finish. Will surely develop more creaminess and less of a grainy texture. Still some tannins evident."
