Kumeu River sits on 30 hectares of “golden vines”. Its picture-perfect terroir is tempered by a cool breeze from the Pacific Ocean with ideal clay soil overlying a sandstone base. Hunting Hill, first planted in 1982, originally played a key role in the Kumeu River Chardonnay blend, contributing ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, this site consistently produced exceptional grapes. Replanted in 2000, Hunting Hill has since reached new heights, offering beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality, making it better than ever.
This bright Chardonnay pairs beautifully with juicy chicken, some slow roasted tomatoes and lots of herbs.
Drinking window: 2026 - 2038
What the critics say:
"Aromas of apples, white peaches and steel with hints of lemongrass, fresh basil, flint and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied with a tight and dense center palate and a crunchy and flavorful finish. Energetic acidity. So fresh yet dense at the same time."
"Very ‘settled’, complex nose. Savoury finish and probably the most burgundian of these Chardonnays. Lemon syrup (not sweet) impression with a light blossomy top note. Real substance and build. It certainly doesn’t seem skinny, despite the lower-than-usual alcohol and has a mineral chewiness on the finish. More elegant, and more citrus, than the Maté’s."
