Romain Taupenot suggested his 2022s show some of the energy and salinity of 2020 but are less concentrated with more red fruit character. They also have the charm of the 2019s, but with higher acid and greater freshness. Whilst the Corton Rognet tipped in at 13.9° the rest of the range were all between 13-13.5°. Romain is typically using 25% new oak for the village wines and 30-35% for the 1er crus.

One of Jancis Robinson's top Burgundies with 18+/20, putting it ahead of Liger-Belair’s La Romanée, Armand Rousseau’s Chambertin, and all Dujac’s Grand Crus.

“As ever this shows more Morey character than Gevrey, with arboreal notes of resin, ivy and woodland herbs, and some black berry fruit alongside sweet blue fruit, cassis, and dried violets. Rich and muscular, led by red berry lozenge, truffle (chocolate and Perigord), dark earth and bounded by well-structured, peppery tannins."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

What the critics say:

18+/20Andy Howard MW, Jancis Robinson

"Cask sample. Shows the extra weight and density expected of the grand cru. Having said that, this is a (relatively) approachable example with loads of ripe dark-berry fruit on the palate. No hard edges. Tannic structure, oak is in the background but very fine and with a very long future ahead. A beautifully sculpted grand cru. Spice notes and dark-cherry notes. Expensive but definitely worth the money."

95-97/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a little crunchier fruit than Les Charmes. Quite detailed, fresh red berries with some riper elements too. There is a greater intensity of fruit, more raspberry compared to the Charmes strawberry, with ripe cherries at the seamless finish. A beautiful wine in the making. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023."

94-96/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2022 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru has a mineral-driven bouquet, more complex than the Charmes, offering tightly wound black fruit with attractive black pepper, minerally scents, and a hint of iris flower. The palate is medium-bodied, very taut and linear, with fine-boned tannins, focused with dark fruit towards the finish. This will probably land at the top of my banded score once in bottle. "
