The Rothschilds in Bordeaux, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy in Burgundy, Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot in Champagne, Angelo Gaja in Piedmont, Serge Hochar in Lebanon, Edouardo Chadwick in Chile... towering figures whose impact and importance to their respective wine regions ensures their names are the very first mentioned in association. To these and others we must surely add Portugal’s Dirk Niepoort, one of the most visionary and pioneering winemakers working today, honoured as such as the 2023 recipient of Decanter’s vaunted “Hall of Fame” Award.
The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez describes Dirk Niepoort as "the most influential person in Portuguese wine—a pioneer, visionary, leader and ambassador. A person I deeply admire." In charting Portugal’s fine wine evolution (revolution?), he declares “to me, the engine of Portuguese wine is Niepoort” adding “the table wines, a game to which they are very new (1990), compared with the Port business, are better than ever.”
The Charme, Dirk’s tribute to his love of Burgundy (he is also the agent for DRC in Portugal), is an old vine field blend made in Vale Mendiz by Nick Delaforce, the company’s Port winemaker, with the grapes foot-trodden in traditional lagares.

"The extremely young and elegant 2023 Charme is the most elegant red in their Douro profile. It's a groundbreaking wine produced in Vale Mendiz and Quinta de Napoles to increase the quantity (and quality) following the same logic—a short maceration of the full clusters in lagar, pressed to barrels where it finished fermenting and aged nine months. They use high-altitude vineyards with a mixture of grapes, including whites. It's floral and herbal, perfumed, elegant, fine-boned and balanced, with an elegant profile. It has terrific balance and should age gracefully. This follows the path of 2019 and 2021. 14,000 bottled produced. "
