We were expecting great things of Philippe from 2018 vintage and he did not disappoint. The harvest began with his Moulin A Vent on 28th August (the “Latour of Beaujolais”) and finished two weeks after. Philippe says the sunny weather gave him “gourmandise” wines with density, like 1990 but with more structure. As usual the reds are vinified 100% whole bunch and with minimal interventions throughout the elevage. Muscular as always and viscous with the fleshy fruit of the vintage, they are nevertheless fresh and well defined with characteristic vitality. Cult status can be an overused description but is rightly-applied to the wines of Pacalet, which now have a fanatical global following.
