The appellation’s grandest domaine, Comte Armand has been overseen by winemaker Paul Zinetti since 2014.

Although it takes many years to reach its full potential, it’s worth the wait as with maturity Epeneux is like a universe in a glass, exploding exponentially in all directions at once. It has great intensity and a weight of rich fruit and impressively structured tannins but like great Barolo, it shows lively floral, elegance and purity too.

As long-lived as many of the Côtes de Nuits’ most renowned wines, it has long been contended that if ever one Côte de Beaune wine deserves elevation to Grand Cru, this is it.

Drinking window: 2025 - 2060

What the critics say:

95/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent."

94/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"5 Star Wine. The colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile."
