The Querciabella estate “stands head and shoulders above the rest, it’s as simple as that”, according to Antonio Galloni.
This mesmerisingly beautiful wine comes from their Sangiovese vineyards across the Classico zone. Querciabella has practised chemical–free organic viticulture since 1988 followed by a transition to biodynamics in 2000. Since 2010 Luca Currado, of Vietti fame, has been a consultant oenologist. The wine maker, Manfred Ing previously worked at Vietti under Luca and brings an emphasis of site-specific winemaking that has not been championed elsewhere in Chianti.
Drinking window: 2024 - 2036
What the critics say:
"The 2021 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific resonance, this wine shows just how compelling the vintage is. Readers will find a Chianti Classico of dynamic energy and volume. Dark red cherry, purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and a gentle kiss of French oak build into the sumptuous, vibrant finish. Superb. The 2021 was aged in 500-liter barrels (5-6% new) for 14 months and is a blend of fruit from Greve, Gaiole and Rodda. Drink 2023-2036."
"Produced since 1974, Querciabella’s annata has surely transformed over the decades but in recent years it has been one of the zone’s most consistent overperformers. In 2021, grapes were picked between 1-21 October, harnessing all the vintage’s concentration with the vivacity of the estate’s high altitude sites. Hints of smoke and terracotta lace through dark raspberry and black currants, as heady rose slowly amplifies. Tight-grained tannins are stitched seamlessly into the supple fruit fabric. There is such a pristine quality to this as it vibrates with scintillating energy."
"A saturated purple/magenta hue, the 2021 Chianti Classico is lush and fresh with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, violet, and fresh leather. Plush and inviting, with bright acidity along the sides of the palate shining through, it offers a velvety texture with a long finish. It’s polished but not oaky and has a very refined feel, with medium to full body and a long and balanced finish. Drink 2026-2040."
