Castiglion Del Bosco has solidified their position as one of the most prominent estates in Montalcino, and were one of the founding members of the 'Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino'. In the vineyards they practice organic farming and harvest by hand, whilst the cellar is completely gravity fed and the wines are fermented with local yeasts. The Brunellos have a Burgundian flair while still being deeply rooted in the traditions of the area.

Their Brunellos are aged for a minimum of 24 months in oak, followed by 24 months in bottle. The sought after location in Campo Del Drago, perched at the top one of the tallest hills in Montalcino, gives the grapes a favourable sea breeze resulting in wines that are sensual and delicate, with floral notes and sleek minerality.

"Here's a second discovery from Castiglion del Bosco. The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Deimassi is slightly darker in appearance next to its sister, Gauggiole. That added saturation translates to both the bouquet and the palate. The wine delivers bold cherry, redcurrant and citrusy blood orange. A dusting of white pepper also comes through here. It shows medium fruit weight with more tannic structure at the back. Named after rocky "masses" found inside the vineyard, Deimassi is a 1.5-hectare site with rocky clay soils. This is a 10,000-bottle release."

"The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino dei Massi is woodsy with nuances of flowery underbrush and sous-bois giving way to crushed wild berries and grilled herbs. It's deeply textural, silky in feel, with polished red fruits and inner spice. A coating of fine tannins frames the wine well, as the 2020 leaves notes of currant with mineral underpinnings that linger long. The dei Massi vineyard was planted in 2008 for Brunello production, yet the expression of the vines in this location has provided fruit that is better suited to creating a characterful Rosso. It's refined for one year in large 50-hectoliter casks."
