Always a favourite here, we’ve just received our allocation of Argiano’s famed Solengo, arguably the best-value SuperTuscan on the market, and in the context of the superb 2021 vintage, this looks set to be another wonderful wine from the estate. In a recent report on the Tuscan 2021s, Antonio Galloni notes that “readers will want to pay special attention to new releases from Tuscany’s 2021 vintage”, and that “many estates produced some of their best wines ever”.

Argiano has been on a hot streak recently, and Eric Guido reports that whilst he is "not quite ready to say that Argiano is the most improved estate in Montalcino over the last ten years, they are certainly in the running for that title". Formerly supervised by the late Giacomo Tachis (of Sassicaia and San Leonardo fame), Solengo is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Sangiovese. The resultant wine combines the structure and elegance of Bordeaux varieties with the generosity of Tuscany and is always a charmer on release, with waves of rich plummy fruit, a lick of spice and wonderfully refined svelte tannins lending backbone and structure. To reach its peak this always needs time in the cellar – fully mature, this wine lives up to the highest standards of SuperTuscans and is often reminiscent of a top-quality classed growth Bordeaux with a distinctive Italian accent.

Tenuta di Argiano

Argiano is one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Montalcino (and was one of the members of the original Brunello Consorzio).

Although the estate is situated in the south of the region which tends to be several degrees warmer than vineyards to the north, the vineyards achieve good elevation and comprise a high percentage of the mineral-rich marl in their clay limestone soil, also found in the hill of Montosoli – Montalcino’s widely accepted “Grand Cru” site.
