This 1976 spent half a century mellowing in cask at their lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, which means all the tannic swagger of youth has long since been traded for something gentler and more contemplative.

Few names in port carry more weight. Founded in 1692 and fiercely independent ever since, Taylor’s is, in Clive Coates MW’s words, “indisputably at the top of any league of port shippers”. The Quarterly Review of Wines goes further and says Taylor’s is “to Port what Romanée-Conti is to Burgundy”. Every year Taylor’s releases a single harvest from fifty years earlier, and the 1976 is only the tenth in the series.

Fifty years in cask has made this extraordinary: honeyed, nutty and orange-scented, rich but still remarkably fresh. It comes in Taylor’s frosted bottle with its own wooden case, which makes it the perfect present for anyone turning fifty or celebrating a golden anniversary, or simply the most memorable bottle on the table this Christmas.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0767/7463/7875/files/taylors-single-harvest-port-1976-750.jpg?v=1793876674
