Torbreck was established in 1994 from the resurrection of old vines vineyards that had fallen into disrepair on selected sites in The Barossa Valley. Twenty five years later Torbreck makes 19 different cuvées to continued acclaim, sourcing fruit from a number of old, some might say ancient, dry-farmed vines in vineyards.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has tasted them that Torbreck’s wines have been something of a tribute to the great wines of the Rhône Valley while remaining essentially Barossa.

The Factor is fermented on Viognier skins, similarly to a Cote Rotie, and is wonderfully nuanced and floral and Jukes awarding 19.5+/20 points admits ‘I feel slightly cowardly not awarding this wine a perfect score… because it is one of the most exciting ways I can think of spending this amount of money on a red wine’.

What the critics say:

96+/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2021 The Factor is a blend of vineyard sites (Krondorf, Rowland Flat, Greenock and Marananga) and is 100% Shiraz (Syrah). On the nose, it offers a complete vision of Barossa Shiraz—chewy, supple, spicy, big, expansive and voluminous. It has a way of being both structural and inviting and flows long through the finish. This is a very good wine here, classy, comforting and evocative, and while silky, it's also pleasingly regional. The tannins are gently chewy through the finish, which I like very much. Good! 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax."

19.5+/20Matthew Jukes

"2021 The Factor is such a hedonistic wine it defies comprehension. It is super sexy on the nose and even more hypnotic on the palate, making this one of the most velvety and luxurious wines in the Torbreck portfolio. The crowning glory in this pantheon of indulgence is the calibre of oak employed and its perfect marriage with the spectacular fruit. There is a creaminess to this monastically calm wine that confounds the senses, and every molecule of fruit seems to be cradled by effortlessly gentle and soothing oak tones. Oak is often the culprit in spoiling thousands of potentially great red wines (I see this repeatedly). Yet Ian Hongell manages, chef-like, to augment this wine with oak orchestration, enabling it to soar in the glass. I am sure the annual oak invoice at Torbreck is an eye-watering one, but every penny is well spent when you can harmonise and elevate your fruit flavours to untold ‘Michelin-three-star’ complexity and detail. I am in complete awe of this wine and its haute couture deportment. It is yet another expression of Torbreck, showing that each vineyard plot, combined with total understanding and vision, can result in the most wonderful experience."

Torbreck Vintners

David Powell share-farms the Torbreck vineyard, a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This share-farming principle has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, which is home to some of the most precious old vines in the world.

The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Their whites are made from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.
