Torbreck was established in 1994 from the resurrection of old vines vineyards that had fallen into disrepair on selected sites in The Barossa Valley. Twenty five years later Torbreck makes 19 different cuvées to continued acclaim, sourcing fruit from a number of old, some might say ancient, dry-farmed vines in vineyards.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has tasted them that Torbreck’s wines have been something of a tribute to the great wines of the Rhône Valley while remaining essentially Barossa.

The Gask, a more recent cuvée from Torbreck, is on particularly good form in the cooler, fresher 2022 vintage. It's from higher altitude, later harvested Eden Valley fruit on granitic, quartz soils and is a particular favourite for its minerality and drive.

What the critics say:

95/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2022 The Gask is all Eden Valley fruit and is picked later than the valley floor, generally a month or so later. The soils are granite, sand and quartz at 450 meters above sea level and irrigated by rain only. Inky intense on the nose here, the wine is an impenetrable beast, but it does so with elegance. The fruit is ripe to the point of moving into savory, with dark chocolate and cocoa, salted licorice, roast beef crust, cracked black peppercorns, blueberry and blackberry, aniseed and blood plum. This is an epic, dark, midnight wine here, brooding and intense. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax."

Torbreck Vintners

David Powell share-farms the Torbreck vineyard, a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This share-farming principle has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, which is home to some of the most precious old vines in the world.

The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Their whites are made from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.
