Torbreck was established in 1994 from the resurrection of old vines vineyards that had fallen into disrepair on selected sites in The Barossa Valley. Twenty five years later Torbreck makes 19 different cuvées to continued acclaim, sourcing fruit from a number of old, some might say ancient, dry-farmed vines in vineyards.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has tasted them that Torbreck’s wines have been something of a tribute to the great wines of the Rhône Valley while remaining essentially Barossa.

The Gask, a more recent cuvée from Torbreck, is from higher altitude, later harvested Eden Valley fruit on granitic, quartz soils and is a particular favourite for its minerality and drive.

What the critics say:

19+/20Matthew Jukes

"Where on earth has this wine come from? There is an answer! It comes from a single plot on the eastern flank of Mount McKenzie, and it is lovingly tended by the Hearnden family! Sixty-three years old in 2023, this wine is an outlier in the Torbreck portfolio because it is more of an anti-fruit missile than a Shiraz-soaked diva. It is macho, bitter, unyielding, verging on masochistic and utterly drop-to-your-knees gorgeous. The liquorice, smoke, crushed blueberries and sour rhubarb highlights skirt around a vault of cold, dark earth, and the core is unyielding and awesome! It sits in tame one-year-old oak that dares not converse with its contents for fear of all-out war! The oak is merely a convenient container for this warrior-like liquid to gather its thoughts before it breaks free and is then cunningly coaxed into the bottle. The iron spine is all but visible through the glass, keeping this wine stiff, upright, proud, and powerful in the bottle. And when it is poured, stand back. This is easily the most brocaded and resplendent The Gask of all time, with ravishing raw silk texture and dark chocolate cake dust coating. I am in awe of this wine in the glass, and there is every chance it will snatch another half-point from my fist to add to its towering 19 if I look away even for the briefest moment. "

96/100James Suckling

"Deeply perfumed and spicy, with lifted aromas of purple fruit, violets and layers of eucalyptus, blackberries, ironstone, bitter chocolate and graphite. The palate is seamlessly integrated and textural, with a firm yet polished tannin profile leading into a metallic, bloody and ironstone finish with layered black and purple fruit. Sophisticated and succulent, with high aging potential. Drink or hold."

95/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2023 The Gask is a single-vineyard wine from Eden Valley, and it is a powerhouse of concentration, density and purple persistence. This wine is intimidating in its power, but it also inspires something like awe in the fact that the wine was grown like this; the fruit naturally produces the concentration and power that we see here in the glass, and it speaks of the Eden so clearly in its expression. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax."

OUR GROWERS

Torbreck Vintners

David Powell share-farms the Torbreck vineyard, a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This share-farming principle has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, which is home to some of the most precious old vines in the world.

The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Their whites are made from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.
