Torbreck was established in 1994 from the resurrection of old vines vineyards that had fallen into disrepair on selected sites in The Barossa Valley. Twenty five years later Torbreck makes 19 different cuvées to continued acclaim, sourcing fruit from a number of old, some might say ancient, dry-farmed vines in vineyards.
It will come as no surprise to anyone who has tasted them that Torbreck’s wines have been something of a tribute to the great wines of the Rhône Valley while remaining essentially Barossa.
The Steading Blanc is a traditional Rhône blend, sourced entirely from Torbreck's Descendant Vineyard on Roennfeldt Road.
What the critics say:
"The only white in the lineup, this fabulous blend of Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier is terrific, with a rare degree of balance for a wine of this style. It sports the merest hint of new oak, which is used exclusively for the Viognier (2%) portion. In addition, the Marsanne is rewarded with second-fill oak, while the main body of the wine, the Roussanne (53%), retains its linear flanks and tension by remaining in stainless steel. The soil moisture from the wet 2023 vintage provided this wine with an early-season boost, and nature took care of the rest. The cool tones and impressive bounce of energy make this a wine that defies its recipe while retaining a thoroughly modern air. This is a fascinating RMV that does not require a main course dish to be anchored alongside it to find admirers. It is bright and edgy enough to be enjoyed before the menu has even been perused, which makes it both clever and delicious."
"The 2024 The Steading Blanc is a composition of Roussanne (63%), Marsanne (28%), and Viognier (9%), and the wine is equal parts floral, chalky phenolics and preserved citrus fruits. It has a burst of fresh saline acidity in the mouth, and the wine seems a perfect fit for the soils of the Barossa. The fruit is from the Descendant vineyard on Roennfeldt Road, first planted in 1994. This is very good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
"Layers of honeysuckle, lemon myrtle, sliced pears, beeswax and stone fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy phenolic edge and a generous texture, giving flavors of nectarines, white flowers, grapefruit pith and green apples. A blend of 53% roussanne, 45% marsanne and 2% viognier fermented in a mix of stainless steel and barrels. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
