In the Scottish Highlands, a “steading” refers to a cluster of barns and outbuildings on a farm—a fitting name for this grounded yet expressive blend. In the Barossa Valley, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvèdre), and Shiraz each bring something distinctive to the table, but when blended, they create something truly special: a rich, layered wine with earthy depth and real character.

The Steading is crafted from some of the oldest surviving vines in the region—remarkably resilient plants that made it through both the global phylloxera crisis of the 1880s and the vine-pull scheme of the 1980s. These ancient vines are at the heart of Torbreck’s mission, and this wine is a reflection of the history, resilience, and potential of Barossa’s heritage varieties.

What the critics say:

18/20Matthew Jukes

"Open and unfurled, this is an arrestingly attractive The Steading, and it is drinking right….NOW. While the Mourvèdre slice is spicier than usual, with a nice gritty traction that keeps the louche Grenache from slip-sliding away, the overall stance on the palate of this crowd-pleaser is of an unabashed performer, yearning to be poured and adored. Keep the mighty 2022 in your cellar and allow this loveable rogue to leapfrog it today!"

94/100James Suckling

"Lifted and perfumed aromas of blackberries, violets, boysenberries, dark cherries, tar and spices. The palate is is finely tuned and tightly wound, with bright and focused flavors of red peppercorns, tobacco leaves, cured meat and dark chocolate. There is lovely transparency and vibrancy from a cool vintage aged in foudres for 18 months. A blend of 57% grenache, 33% shiraz and 10% mataro. Drink or hold."

93/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2023 The Steading comprises a blend of Grenache (57%), Shiraz (33%) and Mataro (10%). The wine is chocolaty and rich and abundant in fruit and spice detail. Shapely tannins define the palate, and the finish is long and concentrated. This wine has a long and popular history, and it is pleasing to see that continued here today. The cool and wet 2023 season is not overly evident in the wine in the glass here; perhaps it is slightly lighter than last year, but it lacks none of the concentration or density of the cuvées past. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork."

OUR GROWERS

Torbreck Vintners

David Powell share-farms the Torbreck vineyard, a practice which involves paying the owner a percentage of the market rate for his grapes in return for totally managing the vineyard. This share-farming principle has enabled Torbreck to use fruit from the very best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, which is home to some of the most precious old vines in the world.

The Torbreck endeavour is based around the classic Barossa Valley varietals of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, and a love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Their whites are made from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.
