Twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner made their mark on the Californian wine scene with their Varner single plot Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Santa Cruz mountains. The Foxglove range uses grapes selected from a group of sites in Paso Robles but is crafted with the same commitment and care as the Varner wines.
The vineyards benefit from the moderating influences of the Pacific allowing the grapes to retain an acidic backbone and vibrancy of fruit flavour. Bob is the winemaker and claims simplicity is the key to great wine, letting the perfect fruit speak for itself. Hence, minimal oak is used to best showcase the pure fruit character of the varietals.
The Foxglove Zinfandel is characterful and fresh with bags of ripe bramble fruit and spice. Soft tannins and subtle acidity make this wine very approachable. The decision to ferment and mature this wine in stainless steel has prevented the fruit from becoming too jammy. Floral and savoury notes add complexity: this is a step above the typical Zin.
