Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.
Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.
Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.
“A well exposed site and De Montille vines stretch from top to bottom. They tend to produce pretty structured wines so de-stemming gives more elegance. 1/3 whole bunch and 30% new oak. Creamy but tight red cherry nose, with notes of violets and crushed stones. Succulent and rich but framed by fine-grained tannins, saline acidity and impressive mineral drive on the finish.”

What the critics say:
"The Volnay Champans from de Montille boasts forward, ripe aromas of plum and blackberry with hints of liquorice and star anise; the texture is creamy and dense, yet on the finish, it is evident there are some firm tannins. The grapes come from a parcel of 0.75 hectares that runs the length of the vineyard. At the top, the soil is sandier; near the bottom, it is heavier clay. The grapes from the top half are fermented as whole clusters; those from the bottom are destemmed; the wines are ageing now in cask (30% new), where they will stay until the spring."
"The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, including one-third whole clusters, has a wonderful bouquet with red cherries and redcurrant scents, a touch of blue fruit emerging with aeration. Nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, fresh and vibrant, and lively with a tensile, citrus finish. Recommended."
