Always on the lookout for growers under the radar, especially those with interesting parcels in Vosne-Romanée, we were impressed with Jacques Cacheux’ 2021s and keen to visit the domaine this year for the first time. We did not leave disappointed. Patrice Cacheax, Jacques’ son, has run the domaine since 1994 joined latterly by his son Charles who led our tasting.

As an aside Charles’ sister Marianne is one half of the dynamic duo Pierre and Marianne Duroché and we can’t help thinking some of their successful maison wines might have fruit sourced from Cacheaux’ holdings...

“On the southern border of Michel Gros’ Clos des Réas (Vosne’s only 1er Cru Monopole), like the Chalandin six barrels were made in 2022, one of which is new (Francois Freres) oak. High-toned blue fruits here lead the aromas by comparison to the Chalandin’s denser nose, with tight hedgerow strawberries, orange peel and the rose petal note that is a motif for the vintage on the more elegant interpretations. Supple and quite plush palate, but clean and fresh, again a red citrus hint, and certainly all the red currants and wild strawberries you could wish for. Tannins are long and lean and the wine shows good energy and verve from start to finish.”

Domaine Jacques Cacheux

The Cacheux family's journey into winemaking can be traced back to the late 1800s when they first began cultivating vines in the Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges areas. However, it wasn't until the 1930s that Jacques Cacheux, the eponymous founder of the domaine, truly established the family's presence in the Burgundian wine world.
