Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.
Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.
Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.
“80% whole bunch, 50% new oak. A rich robe, then deep, sweet but stony nose. Bright and dark red pastille fruits, blood orange rind, twist of pepper and rich earth. Palate is dimensional with an enveloping mouthfeel of truffle-infused soil, Christmas spice, and crushed rocks, drawn out by spicy, peppery tannins. Pretty epic.”

What the critics say:
"90% whole cluster. A ruby edge to the purple colour. A hauntingly beautiful bouquet, brilliant rose petal notes, the lovely fragrance of Gloire de Dijon springs to mind, with the delicacy of really fine red berry fruits. Incredible intensity in such a refined manner, very beautiful long fresh finish. Excellent. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. *****"
"The 2022 'regular' Malconsorts is a delicious wine, objectively not that far behind the Cuvée Christiane. The team has been upgrading this bottling, principally by culling out some of the young vine section and ploughing their entire holding in Malconsorts by horse. The grapes in 2022 were fermented nearly 90% as whole clusters – Brian Sieve relates that he destemmed some of it to get it in the tanks. The wine is superb, super-dense and remarkably aromatic. This wine may open earlier than the Cuvée Christiane; you might try it after five years."
