One of the early joys of the season – choosing my Guru case! This year I’ve gone mainly for classics, with a twist or two along the way.
Starting off with a fresh and vibrant English Sparkling from Sussex superstars Wiston Estate. This is their NV Blanc de Blancs with extended lees ageing – ticks all of the festive fizz boxes beautifully.
Amelie and Charles Sparr are making waves in Alsace, and their ‘Sentiment’ Riesling with a few years maturity is a great demonstration of why. Both exotic and energetic!
The Kaapzicht 1947 is slightly off-piste from traditional white Burgundy, but no less charming and timeless – coming from vines that are over 75 years old, resulting in a complex and utterly satisfying Chenin.
Jane’s Beaujolais are an excellent example of juicy, fruit-driven gamay wines that can also have a spicy, serious side – try as a very credible alternative to pinot this year.
As the main red for the big day, the Château Sansonnet is an absolute belter with a decade of maturity – I’d still suggest decanting to bring out the best of this classically opulent and silky St. Émilion Grand Cru.
To finish, a seductively sweet-fruited drop from Sauternes that will work beautifully with just about every festive dessert, but I think best served chilled alongside a boozy Christmas pudding. Or by itself, half asleep by the fireplace would do just as nicely.
The case includes:
- 1x Wiston Estate, Blanc De Blancs, Nv (75cl)
- 1x Domaine Amelie et Charles Sparr, Sentiment Riesling, 2018 (75cl)
- 1x Kaapzicht, The 1947 Chenin Blanc, 2022 (75cl)
- 1x Les Labourons, Jane Eyre, 2020 (75cl)
- 1x Château Sansonnet, 2014 (75cl)
- 1x Château de Suduiraut, Lions De Suduiraut Sauternes, 2015 (37.5cl)
