Smooth Red

Pinot Noir

This comes from an exciting winery based in Sebastopol, one of the new breed of wine producers looking for lighter wines with less alcohol, purer fruit flavours and greater acidity and freshness. They started out making Syrah but as their tastes changed they moved over to making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2004, now being regarded as one of the area’s top cool climate producers of these grapes.  In total they make around 6000 cases, 60% of the fruit being sourced from their own vineyards, the rest brought in from high quality growers.

Red Car Winery

Our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a perfect blend of Red Car’s most notable, cool-climate vineyards in Fort Ross, Freestone and Occidental. Naturally low in alcohol and high in acidity, it's a mix of heritage and Dijon clones that were hand-sorted, then fermented with a native yeast in small open tops and aged in French oak barrels.

I spent three weeks last year travelling up the West Coast USA tasting my way along Route 101. You can divide Californian Pinot Noir into three; this one is on the elegant and fresh side, with other styles often being too punchy and bold (even described as tasting of cherry cola - ugh). So for a good alternative to Burgundy and a treat, this is a great experiment.

Red Car Winery

California

Carroll Kemp was a producer and Mark Estrin a screenwriter in Hollywood. They shared a common interest and enthusiasm for wine and wine-making. Never did they have intention of starting a winey before they accidentally filled two barrels with their fledgling vintage made from their first rudimentary harvest in 2000. The winery name is a tribute to the electric trolley cars that ran throughout Los Angeles from the late 19th century through the early 1960’s. These "red cars" symbolise a romanticised time and place today. “We strive to make wines that are similarly memorable.” said Carroll. Their winery is now one of the most famous in West Sonoma Coast.
