Rogue Vine Grand Itata Tinto

Itata , Chile

Wild Red

Made from grapes grown on old bush vines with minimal intervention, this is a truly wild wine. The climate is cold in Chile's deep South and the Pacific breeze and granitic soil combines with the passion of the 'amigos' winemakers to make fresh and unique wines with character and personality. Not for the faint-hearted.

"Made with a combination of old vine Cinsault and País, grown in the southerly Itata Valley, this is one of the most exciting Chilean reds I've had in years. Perfumed, spicy and full of personality, it's fresh and minerally with subtle raspberry and red cherry fruit, understated (non existent?) oak influence and vibrant, cool climate vivacity. Like a Pinot Noir crossed with a northern Rhône Syrah, but with an ancient Chilean personality that is all its own."
94 points, Tim Atkin

Rogue Vine, Los Amigos Itata

The Amigos who make the wine say "We love wine! And we love authentic wines. When I came back from a long 10 year journey to different parts of the wine world and landed in Itata, I could not believe these steep slopes with old bush vines have been neglected for more than 300 years. While living in South Africa for 3 years I tasted what sort of wine one can possibly achieve with bush vines, and so with a friend we started this small dream of making the wines we would like to drink!!"

This is a very exciting wild red from the southern Chilean region of Itata. It’s buzzing with aromas of warm spices, bright cherries and raspberries. The taste is crunchy, with vibrant red fruits, smooth light tannins and loads of personality. Lovers of wild and exciting wines will go crazy for this. If your tastes are more conservative, then give it to a friend!

Rogue Vine, Los Amigos Itata

The wine maker, Rogue Vine, applies a concept called Reverse Winemaking to their craft: they decide what wine they want to make first and then they have to find the right place to grow the vines. Rogue Vines rediscovered the old and forgotten region of Itata, first planted with bush vines in 1551. Many of the vines today are over 100 years old, and thrive on the steep slopes, which need no additional irrigation. These vines add a sense of origin, balance and personality to the wines produced. High in the granite hills, the area went out of favour in preference to huge, commercial wineries on the planes of central Chile. Revitalized by Rogue Vine and their band of Los Amigos from typically small vineyards, Itata is becoming the talk of Chile once again.
