Tenuta San Guido New Release

The release of the 2018 marks the 50th commercial vintage of Tenuta San Guido’s flagship wine Sassicaia. In addition, it is another instance where a vintage with an eight in it “brings good luck” according to General Manager Carlo Paoli, in Monica Larner’s recent article on the vintage. “The 2018 vintage shows a consistent link to 2008, 1998, 1988 and, of course, the 1968 vintage that marks Sassicaia’s debut on the market.” Monica Larner goes on to state that the 2018 has the precision and elegance of the 2016 but with some of the restraint from the 2017, allowing this wine to score a 97+. She emphasises the “+”suggesting that this score could easily climb.

The three major critics (James Suckling, Monica Larner and Antonio Galloni) have commented that this wine will require time in bottle to develop and reach its peak. This allows for a great opportunity to drink the Guidalberto. As usual, Guidalberto is one vintage ahead. Guidalberto can be enjoyed at a younger age and named after the family member who planted the iconic cypress tree avenue which marks the entrance to the Bolgheri estate. Sadly there are no scores out there at the moment, but the 2019 vintage of this wine will be a safe bet.
