Enjoy your summer Iberian style with these stunning wines that show the generous character of Spain and Portugal. There’s so much more than Rioja and Port to this profound part of the wine world, and these superstars aim to set the record straight once and for all. Escape to the shade with a Spanish Albariño, grab a Jumilla for pizza in the park or fire up the barbecue alongside a lovely Touriga blend from the Douro.

  Joven Godello, Vina Barroca, 2019
Godello is one of those little known Spanish grapes that really deserves more attention. Wonderfully fragrant, with ripe fruits and spices on a tapestry of earthy and floral aromas, this superstar from Vina Barroca hits the palate with a skilfully deft touch, before fully revealing itself in a long, dense and persistent finish.

Fento Wines La Liebre y la Tortuga, 2018
Headed by eminent winemaker Eulogio Pomares, this stunning wine is named after Aesop’s Tortoise and the Hare fable, combining the youthful joie de vivre of Albariño with slow and steady winemaking techniques for added complexity. It’s already been rated an Indy Best and is made in waving distance of Spain, on the lower slopes of the Minho River, offering a rounder, more supple style of Albariño that nevertheless has all the grape's zesty, citrus and grassy appeal.

Celler Alimara El Senyal Blanc, 2016
This is a new Celler owned by British couple Andy and Ali McLeod who have slowly been buying old vines in Spain’s illustrious Terra Alta region in Catalonia. Their Senyal Blanc label is made from lovely 100% old vine white Garnacha aged on oak for 6 months. The result is breathtakingly good – rich and complex, with citrus fruits and a spicy, mineral-laden core.

  Puerto del Monte, Mencia, 2018
From north-west Spain, Puerto del Monte translates to “mountain pass” and is named after the peaks of Las Médulas in Bierzo that glow copper-red in the evening sun. The nose explodes with intense of aromas of black fruit, tar and pencil lead, whilst on the palate you really get a feel for the glorious old vines from which this beautiful wine is made.

  Estancia del Silencia, Jumilla, 2018
From a lovely estate in Jumilla, a vinous hilly haven in the south-east of Spain, this gorgeous red is made from 100% Monastrell and offers a charming nose of warm, fruity aromas. On the palate the dark fruits rise to the fore, backed by smooth creamy tannins. Jumilla always provides the perfect foil for a pizza and the Estancia del Silencio is no exception.

  Prazo de Roriz, 2017
Rising easterly out of Porto, the Douro Valley is most famous for its fortified wines but a range of winemakers are doing very exciting things with dry reds and whites. The Prazo de Roriz 2017 is one such success story, characterised by a melange of attractive red fruits, including raspberries and red cherry, upheld by a pleasant mineral verve with notes of black pepper and spice. This is serious stuff and shows why Portugal is one of the great hidden gems in the wine world.
