The Viognier Grape

This is a thick-skinned grape variety, which needs a long, warm (not hot) growing season to ripen fully. The resulting wine will be a rich, golden colour, even when young, with low acidity, and aromas of peach, pears, violets.

Up to 20% of Viognier is allowed to blend with red Syrah in Côte-Rôtie, Rhône Valley, in France where this grape originates. Along with its aromas, Viognier brings a softness and a rounder mouthfeel to the heavyweight, mineral Syrah.

Viognier can be found in California and Australia too as well as more southern areas of France.
