Clemens Busch Marienburg 'Rothenpfad Reserve' GL
It's simply pure and fresh—actually challenging—kind of like a liquid Holy Grail Riesling for purists.
Clemens always manages to coax magic out of the Marienburg hill and the last three years have been no exception. Here we offer the first dry and sweet releases of 2019, the longer lees-aged top crus from 2018 and two freshly released, two-year lease aged reserve crus. Take your pick, it’s a veritable feast.
"As promising and gorgeously savory as the 2019s are, the 2018s should not be underrated. 2018 is an exceptional vintage for Rita and Clemens Busch, and the range of great wines is wide. Born in a warm yet less dry year than elsewhere, the 2018s are richer than the 2019s and 2017s and certainly lower in acidity. The 2018 GGs, as well as the 2017 Reserve wines are absolutely fabulous. In fact, I don't know many other producers who excel with all the Riesling disciplines from dry to noble sweet. This explains why so many wines are rated 95 or 96, no matter the style or level of sweetness or even the vintage." Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, August 2020
"The 2017 Marienburg Rothenpfad Reserve is pure and intense on the generous, elegant and very complex but refined nose that displays stony and floral/herbal notes. Full-bodied and creamy on the palate, this is a dense and juicy yet always refined and elegant Rothenpfad with very fine tannins and enormous structure and power on the intense, salty finish. This is Riesling on the edge, a mouthfull of complexity that is not easy to drink at this early stage. Try to meditate over it and drink it always slowly and thoughtful. "/ 94-95+ pts, Stephan Reinhardt, WA
"The 2017er Marienburg Rothenpfad Réserve, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in an iron-rich part of the Marienburg vineyard and was left on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled (hence the late AP number). It offers a beautiful nose made of pear, bergamot, mirabelle, licorice, smoke, and spices, all wrapped into a dash of grapefruit and minty herbs. The wine is nicely packed with fruity and spice flavors on the full-bodied palate and leaves a beautifully playful feel in the long and persistent finish. The after-taste is hugely complex and elegant. This wine really reveals itself after some airing and develops more cut and freshness by the minute. 2022-2032." 94 pts, Mosel Fine Wines, By Jean Fisch and David Rayer
