Clos I Terrasses Clos Erasmus
The most fashionable and sought after fine wines in Spain right now are from a handful of small growers in Priorat: Rene Berbier (Clos Mogador), Alvaro Palacios (Ermita) and Daphne Glorian (Clos I Terrasses) are leading the charge. The king grape here is Garnacha (Grenache), which is one of the few varieties that continues to be productive at 70+ years old, enabling old vine wines of great complexity that maintain their vivacity.
Clos Erasmus is the flagship wine from Daphne and winemaker Esther Nin and is truly extraordinary, with a globally unrivalled 97.8 point WA average over the last decade and a half.
Vintage report from Daphne: The 2018 vintage started off very well, with frequent rains from January thru May, with even a snowy episode in March. The view of the Montsant dusted with snow that morning was gorgeous, if inexpected. The perfect conditions at the time of fruit set produced a riot of grapes, which were sustained thru the summer thanks to a few showers, just when we needed them, in spite of the temperatures climbing up steadily. Even though August turned out to be very hot, as often in the Priorat the breezes blowing from the Mediterranean kept the plants cool enough for them to keep maturing the grapes steadily. By the end of summer, it was clear that we had an amazing harvest ahead of us, with the grapes being not only perfect but plentiful. This was the first time ever we reached 21 hectolitres per hectare. As a result the wines are fresh, vibrant, with a perfect armature of crisp fruit and acidity as well as a bright color. Both have an ethereal character making this vintage very special. Laurel is an explosion of flowers and red fruit, slightly on the tart side, yet fleshy, raspberries, bing cherries, white peach, orange and thyme blossoms. Clos Erasmus develops slowly in the glass, revealing first the graphite aromas which have travelled all the way from its roots, followed by blackberries, cranberries, licorice all wrapped up in soft tannins. An intriguing, juicy, teasing wine which engages your palate entirely.
Clos Erasmus 2018: Blend: 85% Garnatxa, 15% Syrah. The grapes come from the same parcels year after year, Escales, Aubagues and Socarrats, which are fermented and aged separately. Destemmed, sorted by hand and slightly crushed, the grapes ferment in 10-15 HL wooden vats. The macerations lasted 30-35 days. The malolactic fermentation took place over the course of a few months in barrel. The wines were aged in 228L barrels (50% new).
"A blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Syrah, 2018 Clos Erasmus comes from a year with good yields and enough rain for good ripeness of the grapes. The vines are now 36 years old on average, and the grapes fermented after a cold soak in 1,000-, 1,500- and 2,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and a five-week maceration. It matured in new and second use Burgundian 228-liter oak barrels, with around 40% new oak. This is a very elegant and perfumed vintage for Clos Erasmus, a wine that reveals a bright ruby color and a exotic nose that mixes flowers with tons of sweet spices. It is still very young and influenced by the élevage in oak, with something herbal and fresh, reminiscent of pine needles. The palate is textured and velvety, lace and dust, with fine-grained tannins that bring back the memories of the slate rocks; it is pure and detailed and has terrible balance, focus, inner strength, filigree and subdued minerality. I'd wait a little bit for the oak to get integrated before pulling the cork. It has the ingredients, stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle for a long time. 3,319 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2020." 99 pts, Luis Gutiérrez, WA
