Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru 'Les Rugiens - Bas'
Our visits to de Montille get (thankfully) longer each year as we continue to deepen our relationship with Etienne, Brian and the team. I can’t think of another address in Burgundy that has such strength in its domaine whites and Cote de Beaune reds (and the highly sought after Vosne Romanée ‘Malconsorts’ cherry on top) so we are delighted to carry a good selection from across their portfolio.
Brian is rightly pleased with the domaine’s wines again this year commenting on a good balance of acidity and alcohol but adding a note of caution about climate change: 2019 was one of the driest vintages on record and he suggests Burgundy is in “in a window right now. Pinot Noir is a delicate variety and we need more water and less sun”. Overall he preferred slightly fewer whole bunches and less new oak than 2018. Etienne adds that 2019 has a “classic textural character” and was “a consensual vintage – everyone could make the style of wine they wanted, unlike the last three vintages, here there is something for everyone”. The latter is certainly true here at de Montille with chiselled, polished reds and racy but juicy whites. Once again Beaune 1er Cru (both colours) continues to over perform and offer exceptional value.
"From 40 year old vines, planted in iron and clay over limestone soils, from a parcel which incidentally is just above the one owned by the Hospices de Beaune – which forms part of the ‘Dame de Charities’ cuvée on which we successfully bid for two barrels in last year’s auction. In 2019 Brian went with 100% whole bunch, and 40% new oak. Intense, dark fruit, currants, red plums, orange skin and fig jam, an expansive complex of fruit aromas, deep and brooding with some damp earth and rust too. Palate has good depth and directness, a morass of concentrated, tucked in fruit with liquorice and soy notes, bounded by stony tannins. Very impressive, leading the red pack so far." Tom, Wine Guru
"This comes from the plot just north of that belonging to the Hospices de Beaune, and has been vinified as 100% whole cluster. Dark purple with a lighter rim. Seamless perfect ripeness of fruit. Then a little oak sweetness behind, but builds up beautifully to a really long, high class, ripe summer pudding finish. Tasted: October 2020" 5 Stars, 93-96 pts, Jasper Morris MW
"The 2019 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has the finest bouquet of the four Pommards tasted, the 100% whole cluster seamlessly integrated into the more black than red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, classic in style, with touches of Earl Grey infusing the finish. Cohesive and very persistent, this is an excellent and quite noble Les Rugiens." 92-94 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
