Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Aigrots' blanc
Our visits to de Montille get (thankfully) longer each year as we continue to deepen our relationship with Etienne, Brian and the team. I can’t think of another address in Burgundy that has such strength in its domaine whites and Cote de Beaune reds (and the highly sought after Vosne Romanée ‘Malconsorts’ cherry on top) so we are delighted to carry a good selection from across their portfolio.
Brian is rightly pleased with the domaine’s wines again this year commenting on a good balance of acidity and alcohol but adding a note of caution about climate change: 2019 was one of the driest vintages on record and he suggests Burgundy is in “in a window right now. Pinot Noir is a delicate variety and we need more water and less sun”. Overall he preferred slightly fewer whole bunches and less new oak than 2018. Etienne adds that 2019 has a “classic textural character” and was “a consensual vintage – everyone could make the style of wine they wanted, unlike the last three vintages, here there is something for everyone”. The latter is certainly true here at de Montille with chiselled, polished reds and racy but juicy whites. Once again Beaune 1er Cru (both colours) continues to over perform and offer exceptional value.
"A vineyard that is famous courtesy of Domaine Lafarge, although less than 10% of its production is white. Etienne is one among a growing number (ourselves very much included) who are pleased to see the premier crus of Beaune starting to regain the exalted reputation they once held. Right below hillside of Beaune, behind the rugby stadium, there are heavier soils, but on top of limestone. Somewhere in between the power of Corton Charlemagne and the elegance and floral character of the famed wines of Cotes de Blanc, but about half the price of a Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru of similar quality. A small amount of new oak adds to the wine’s generosity but the style is deliberately kept quite lean and saline to ensure the mineral qualities of the vineyard are what linger. The story and value proposition are compelling and if you are not already on the “beaunewagon” – Aigrots will tip you over the line. Lightly tropical fruit (guava not mango) and smoky pears on nose give intriguing richness but really good zip and zing too, a balance of richness and vivacity and good saline kiss at end. Fast Delivery takes 1-3 working days and costs £12.50 for orders under £75. Orders over £75 are subject to Fast & FREE Delivery.
Same Day Delivery London is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 11am Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). For orders over £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £15. For orders under £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £27.50. If ordered after 11am, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. Saturday Delivery costs £30. This option is available to all UK mainland postcodes for orders placed between 1pm on Thursday and 1pm on Friday. This is optional at checkout, to be chosen in place of our standard 1 – 3 working day service. If you specifically need to place an order for Saturday delivery outside of the above times, please contact us at email@example.com and we will see if we can arrange this for you.
Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker. The expected delivery timelines for each product should be specified on the product page. Otherwise, please contact us for the information.
