Our visits to de Montille get (thankfully) longer each year as we continue to deepen our relationship with Etienne, Brian and the team. I can’t think of another address in Burgundy that has such strength in its domaine whites and Cote de Beaune reds (and the highly sought after Vosne Romanée ‘Malconsorts’ cherry on top) so we are delighted to carry a good selection from across their portfolio.

Brian is rightly pleased with the domaine’s wines again this year commenting on a good balance of acidity and alcohol but adding a note of caution about climate change: 2019 was one of the driest vintages on record and he suggests Burgundy is in “in a window right now. Pinot Noir is a delicate variety and we need more water and less sun”. Overall he preferred slightly fewer whole bunches and less new oak than 2018. Etienne adds that 2019 has a “classic textural character” and was “a consensual vintage – everyone could make the style of wine they wanted, unlike the last three vintages, here there is something for everyone”. The latter is certainly true here at de Montille with chiselled, polished reds and racy but juicy whites. Once again Beaune 1er Cru (both colours) continues to over perform and offer exceptional value.

"From 55 year-old vines between the parcels belonging to Domaines Dujac and Clos Frantin (the latter owning the largest holdings of the vineyard). The combination of limestone and sandy soils here gives harder edges and drier, more powerful tannins. Brian used 100% whole bunches this year (2018 was two thirds). As ever, this is on strict allocation for regular purchasers buying across a broad range of de Montille wines and other domaines. A deep, deep nose, really spirals you in to the aromas, like falling down the rabbit hole, but despite the intensity and concentration there is great vitality and freshness. Tight cherries and blood orange skin and black truffles stamped on hard in to close packed, stony, dark earth. Palate is generous, and energetic, almost surprisingly sweet and vibrant given the dramatic and serious nose, the fruits wrapped around a stony depths, succulent finish, that really drives on." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru

"100% whole cluster, 50% new wood. I was not quite as thrilled as usual by either of the Malconsorts cuvées this year. The ‘regular’ version includes 18 rows of vines on sandier soil at the top of the vineyard. Did these dry out a bit? The 2019 Malconsorts shows dark ripe fruit, with a little bit of oak and a slightly firm dry finish. There is still a lot going on here Tasted: October 2020" 92-96 pts, Jasper Morris

"The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and includes young vines. It has a very intense bouquet of red and blue fruit infused with rose petal and violet, touches of clove and blood orange developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit on the entry, quite detailed and structured, and blueberry and blackberry toward the finish. It needs to finish its élevage to fully cohere. Very fine persistence on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
