Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru 'Aux Malconsorts - Christiane'
Our visits to de Montille get (thankfully) longer each year as we continue to deepen our relationship with Etienne, Brian and the team. I can’t think of another address in Burgundy that has such strength in its domaine whites and Cote de Beaune reds (and the highly sought after Vosne Romanée ‘Malconsorts’ cherry on top) so we are delighted to carry a good selection from across their portfolio.
Brian is rightly pleased with the domaine’s wines again this year commenting on a good balance of acidity and alcohol but adding a note of caution about climate change: 2019 was one of the driest vintages on record and he suggests Burgundy is in “in a window right now. Pinot Noir is a delicate variety and we need more water and less sun”. Overall he preferred slightly fewer whole bunches and less new oak than 2018. Etienne adds that 2019 has a “classic textural character” and was “a consensual vintage – everyone could make the style of wine they wanted, unlike the last three vintages, here there is something for everyone”. The latter is certainly true here at de Montille with chiselled, polished reds and racy but juicy whites. Once again Beaune 1er Cru (both colours) continues to over perform and offer exceptional value.
"The domaine’s parcel touches La Tache on the north and west sides, and has a touch more clay in the soil than their other limestone dense parcel at the very top of the vineyard. The nose is a little more restrained, even more densely compacted – more black hole than rabbit hole, reluctantly releasing dark chocolate intensity, and the whiff of stones, and if you really push, dried violets and polished red cherries somewhere in the depths. More stoniness on the palate, the usual chalky purity to the tannins is evident and a darker, more burnished, toasted character to the fruit. Really deft though – pulses with energy but gripped tight for now. This will live for a long time." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"100% whole cluster, 60% new wood. The Christiane bottling from the part of Malconsorts, which thinks it should have been La Tâche tends to be a super-sensual version of the vineyard, and do it is again. Rich dark purple in colour, the sensuality in 2019 is shown as very dark fruit. Malconsorts can carry this level of deep ripe fruit adequately, but the power may be smothering some of the éclat, which this wine typically offers. Tasted: October 2020" 93-97 pts, Jasper Morris
"The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is whole cluster fruit and has a touch more intensity on the nose, while the fruit is a little darker: bilberry and blackberry, plus touches of violet petals. The medium-bodied palate is rounded with a refined opening, a smooth texture and good grip. Plenty of freshness here, and then the structure synonymous with Malconsorts kicks in on the finish. Superb." 94-96 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
