Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis 1er Cru 'les Vaillons'
Within the house of Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit is well known for its careful selection of Chablis styles and we have chosen our favourites of the vintage.
Chateau Long-Depaquit sits at the centre of the village of Chablis, surrounded by a rose garden. The approach is to limit grape yields in the vineyard, intervention and oak in the winery to develop wines with purity and focus on expression of the individual plots. The winery was modernised in 2014, leading to reduced environmental impact and a step up in quality.
The 2019 vintage started with early Spring warmth, which left the vines susceptible to late frosts and a rainy May, which affected yields (20-40% of the grapes were lost) but not quality. A long, dry and warm summer left the remaining crop in perfect condition and allowed a near perfect balance of ripeness, concentration and acidity. Overall, a wonderful year for production of a modern style of Chablis, with a touch more ripeness to counterbalance its trademark stoniness.
"I approach any tasting of Chablis with trepidation, even when the subject matter is the illustrious range of Domaine Long-Depaquit, which is part of the family-owned Domaines Albert Bichot. Whilst I’ll be hard to shift from my belief that Chardonnay finds its most sensuous expression in southern Burgundy, these fine examples represent the head to the Côte d’Or’s heart."
"From a vineyard in the central 'Epinottes' sector of the famous 'Les Vaillons', this is a classic in every sense. Enticed by profuse notes of blossom and ripening green and red apples, I dive into the body, which envelops the palate with succulent citron and ripe green apples. There’s an intriguing cool spice on the lingering finish. This drinks wonderfully now, but will be a treat to savour in 5 years." Nathan Hill
"Mid yellow colour. The 2019 Long Depaquit Vaillons offers a clear and classic nose, the refinement of little stones, plenty of juice in the fruit behind, not over ripe, though perhaps a little more heat at the back, but this is still true to type. Tasted: October 2020" 91 pts, Jasper Morris, MW
