Edouard Delaunay Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
Over the hills and far away to the Haut Cotes…. And a kaleidoscopic tasting with Laurent Delaunay at the family’s beautiful Chateau de Charmont. 28 wines tried – from Bourgogne Aligoté (absolutely outstanding – who needs Chardonnay?!?) right through to Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot, with many highlights across appellations and crus. The choice of parcels, and pragmatic approach – where every cuvée is treated individually without a set formula for quantity of new oak, or amount of whole bunches used etc, allows each wine to offer a true and deeply satisfying expression of the terroirs. Whilst the strength in Nuits Saint Georges is especially noticeable, there are some absolute gems throughout – and the consistent balance of succulence and focus, sweetness and salinity, authenticity and sophistication shows that there are great things ahead for Maison Delaunay. Watch out for Laurent picking some of his top under the radar wines for us and elsewhere explaining why we should embrace his passion for Nuits Saint Georges…
" This is form a plot that is half planted to Pinot, and half to chardonnay. It’s on the border between Pernand Vergellesses and Aloxe Corton and faces south so gets very ripe but is high enough up on the hill that it keeps a nice freshness. It sees a third new oak. Buttery Richness on the nose, then peach skin, yellow plum and papaya aromas, followed by a more subtle herbal and floral notes - bergamot and acacia. Really attractive. The lateral amplitude on the palate locates you in Grand Cru territory – the richness and depth reaches in to your molars but there is good minerally zip to keep everything getting too old school Sonoma." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"60% new wood. Mid lemon yellow. A mix of banana, fresh pineapple and lemon scented stoniness. This is a fairly concentrated example, the wood again offers a few tannins here. The situation of the vines, at the top of the hill in En Charlemagne also contributes to the freshness. Long and fine with considerable structure. Tasted: October 2020" 93-96 pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
