Jane Eyre Corton Grand Cru
Melbourne-born Jane Eyre-Renard, one of the pioneers of the growing micro-negotiant movement, has been based in Burgundy since 2003, paying her dues at some top domaines including de Montille and Comtes Lafon. She currently makes her own wines in a facility in Bligny-le-Beaune, shared with, among others, Dominique Lafon. Her wines, whether from Beaune, Nuits, or Beaujolais, display her distinctive style - charming and inviting, with supple tannins and soft but bright fruits. Gentle extraction and judicious use of new oak means these have been among the more immediately appealing Burgundies in our portfolio. The 2018 vintage however has clearly stamped its imprint over Jane’s wines as there is greater power, deeper fruit and gravitas allied to the usual charm and definition. Her decision to include 30% whole bunches (as opposed to none last year) has given the wines extra depth and complexity to balance the ripe fruit. Meanwhile her preference for early bottling, important in a vintage like 2018 to preserve freshness and prevent the fruit drying out, still means the range is pretty accessible, but it is definitely serious. Jane says “ultimately vintage and vineyard should trump your winemaking” but in 2018 all three elements have combined to create something rather special.
Blended from two barrels of Marachaudes towards bottom of hill which give pensive structure and brooding density, and one barrel of Renardes, and half a barrel of biodynamically farmed Bressandes, both higher up the hill, and bringing more lifted, aerien fruit and freshness, all vinified together. An impressive, nuanced melange of floral red and deeper black fruits, with plenty of five spice, and lush, sexy, truffled notes. There is very attractive sweetness and depth to the palate, its really rather Christmassy with sandalwood and figs. The sophisticated tannins are juicy but layered, this is already coming together really well and will be fascinating to chart its development over the next couple of decades. Tom, Wine Guru
A cheerful blend of 2 barrels Maréchaudes, one of Renardes and half from Bressandes, all vinified together. Full glowing purple with a nose of considerable distinction. 40% whole bunches gives a delicious tingle at the back and it finishes on rich ripe red fruit with good acidity, like a summer pudding mix. 92-94/100, Jasper Morris
Jane Eyre's classy Corton is a co-fermented blend of mostly Maréchaudes with Renardes and a little Bressandes. Spicy, muscular and focused, it's ripe and rich, but with lots of acidity, some lift and structure from 40% whole bunches, layers of bramble and wild strawberry fruit and the depth, grip and concentration to age beautifully in bottle. 95/100, Tim Atkin MW
