Jane Eyre Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Corbeaux'
It’s always a pleasure to see Jane – her wines are never less than extremely personable and engaging and 2019 is no exception. On arrival we learned she had just received a second star from the RVF (equivalent of the Michelin Guide for wine) – which is justly deserved. Jane suggests her 19s are styled nearer to the bigger 18s than the lighter 17s but with higher acid levels and thus are potentially longer lived.
"The parcel, one of Gevrey’s most northerly, touches some of the best vines of Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. Jane made three barrels and used 40% whole bunch. A rich and exotic bouquet of dense and ripe aromas with finer, more sophisticated notes – damsons, cherry Bakewell tarts and truffles, but also violets, stone dust and five-spice. The multi-layered palate has red plums and figs and quivers with intense energy, this is succulent yet stony juice with a long, deep finish. My favourite of Jane’s wines this year." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"Corbeaux is next to the illustrious grand cru Mazis-Chambertin. 30% whole bunch and no new oak, in order to showcase the purity of the fruit. 800 bottles and 25 magnums made. Mid garnet. Heady mushrooms and violet nose. This is extraordinarily concentrated and tastes like a grand cru. Wow! Classic, top-quality red burgundy that's so vibrant, rich and yet elegant. Really rather thrilling. Perhaps the most exciting 2019 I have tasted in London." 17.5 pts, Jancis Robinson
"Fine clear red purple, delicious bright lively fruit, really delicious, in a definitely ripe style, super sensual lush cherry notes. Apparently this Corbeaux weighs in at 14.5%, but as long as you don’t mind that, this is lovely. Tasted: October 2020" 90-94 pts, Jasper Morris MW
"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux 1er Cru is matured in one-third new oak with 30–40% whole bunch. It has a warm, inviting bouquet of quite plush red fruit plus a light marine scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, edgier than the Village Cru, with a spicier, black pepper and clove-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Good potential. Classy. " 91-93 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
