Jane Eyre Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru 'Vergelesses'
It’s always a pleasure to see Jane – her wines are never less than extremely personable and engaging and 2019 is no exception. On arrival we learned she had just received a second star from the RVF (equivalent of the Michelin Guide for wine) – which is justly deserved. Jane suggests her 19s are styled nearer to the bigger 18s than the lighter 17s but with higher acid levels and thus are potentially longer lived.
"Jane made four barrels from this prestigious vineyard, one of which is new and again 30% whole bunches used. Savigny as a village performed well in 2019, especially the 1er Crus and this is persuasive if less pretty than in lighter vintages. Dusty, smoky red berries and red cherries and ivy-wapped bark. Palate is quite rich, but well-defined with some fresh figs and lots of plums and a crunchy salty finish." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"The vineyard is located in the upper part of this famous parcel on an east-facing slope looking over to the hill of Corton. 30% whole bunch, 25% new oak. Just bottled. Good drive and tension with very pure fruit flavours: violets and a hint of mushrooms. I can't see how any modern burgundy lover would be disappointed by this subtle, beautifully balanced wine that is already drinking beautifully. I may be under-scoring it… It may not last forever but it is pretty impressive on the finish." 16.5 pts, Jancis Robinson
