Domaine Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Bas de Combe'
Blink and you’d literally miss Domaine Jean Tardy, an envelope-sized sign by a driveway off the RN74 just outside Vosne Romanée the only indication that you are in the right place. Unprepossessing as this domaine looks, the wines continue to show plenty of personality and Guillaume does a particularly impressive line in vieilles vignes lieu dits (old vine, single vineyards), which allow him to “avoid making a bad marriage between the wrong parcels”. The results are always seductive and digestible and compete with premier crus for quality and complexity.
"The 2015 Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes Bas de Combe has a rip-roaring bouquet with succulent ripe red cherries, bergamot and violet aromas that just soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, nimble on its toes with fleshy dark cherry fruit laced with bay leaf and white pepper, leading to a precise and quite sustained finish. There is a bit of bravura to this 2015 and it comes recommended." 92 pts, Neal Martin, WA
"(from 80-year-old vines adjacent to Vosne-Romanée): Moderately saturated dark red. Crushed blackberry and spicy oak scents are lifted by a subtle violet topnote. Full, supple and very ripe, with the high percentage of millerandé grapes giving the wine a creamier texture and silky tannins. Late pungent minerality nicely draws out the finish. This round but fresh wine nicely combines Nuits power and Vosne elegance." 89-9 pts, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous
"This is the first wine to display appreciable wood toast but not so much as to really fight with the notably ripe spiced cassis and warm earth aromas. The dense, serious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors also possess a velvety texture before culminating in a palate coating finale that delivers excellent persistence for a villages level Nuits. This is definitely worth considering." 89-91 pts, Allen Meadows, Burghound
