La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva
“Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices.” Luis Gutierrez, the Wine Advocate
“Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
We are very excited to bring you the next instalment from La Rioja Alta; their second vintage of the outstanding Viña Arana Gran Reserva. With no 904 and 890 release in 2014 only the best fruit was used for the Viña Arana Gran Reserva. Their first release (2012) garnered 97 Points & Platinum Award from Decanter, with the 2014 having the potential to be even better.
The makeup of the wine has changed from the original Viña Arana, replacing the Mazuelo to the Graciano grape. The Graciano (6%) gives the wine an aromatic intensity and acidity, to carry the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo (94%). This great vintage of Viña Arana Gran Reserva comes from 40 year-old vineyards in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno and Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. The grapes are vinified separately in American oak for 3 years, and racked as few times as possible.
Although being irresistible now, the Viña Arana will continue to age gracefully over the next 10 years.
"Lots of mushroom and walnut aromas with plum and leather, too. It’s full-bodied, but very soft and creamy-textured with lots of old wood, mushroom and ripe fruit on the finish. Some chocolate and hazelnut. Complex and gorgeous. Drink or hold." 96 pts, James Suckling
"Arana commemorates one of La Rioja Alta's historic families. The Tempranillo (95%) and Graciano (5%) are aged separately in American oak barrels for three years before blending, then for three years in bottle (two years less than the 904, and six years less than the 890). The winery's keynote to this Rioja is 'freshness'. I agree.." 96 pts, Decanter
"Finally, there was the 2014 Viña Arana Rioja Gran Reserva, which comprises 94% Tempranillo from Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas and 6% Graciano from Montecillo. This was aged in American oak for three years and bottled in June 2018. Exhibiting just a modicum of browning on the rim, it offers crushed strawberry, field mushroom, clove and singed leather on the nose, hints of vine tomato and balsamic following with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins that lend this Gran Reserva its smooth veneer. Moderate in depth, it is classic in style and no bodybuilder. It remains rather understated toward the finish, offering soy-infused red fruit, sour cherries, orange peel, porcini and dried herbs." 91 pts, Neal Martin
