Luke’ Wine Guru Case
Strange times can often call for strange measures… but I feel as though we’ve been there and tried that. The only certainty is that it’s cold and wintery outside, so this time around I’ve gone for bottles focussed on comfort and some degree of familiarity; long standing favourites all of them, but no less delicious for it. Enjoy!
Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi DOCG, 2019: right yellow color, delicate bouquet of flowers and fruit with a scent of peach. Full and rich flavour, the complete grape-ripening gives a wine which is soft on the palate with a fine aromatic flavor at the end.
Albert Bichot Bourgogne Cote d'Or Chardonnay 'Secret de Famille', 2018: From plots across the Cote de Beaune, including Meursault, Puligny and Saint Aubin, and half aged in barrel (of which 20% is new) this achieves an impressive roundness and mid-palate depth for its modest level. Apples and smoky pears, and just enough bright acidity to keep the fruit on its toes. Light and juicy, very drinkable straight away.
Castello Romitorio Rosso di Montalcino DOC, 2018: "The 2018 Castello Romitorio Rosso di Montalcino takes time to blossom in the glass, yet it is totally worth the wait. A pretty and understated display of cherry and strawberry mixed with dusty earth, roses and hints of undergrowth opens nicely. Soft, silky textures flood the palate with ripe red and hints of blue fruit, sweet yet perfectly contrasted by saline-minerality, along with hints of fine tannin that slowly mount toward the close. The finish is remarkably long, as notes of dried wild berries, blueberry skins and hints of violet florals linger." 91 pts, Eric Guido, Vinous
Château Teyssier, 2015: "Bright summer berry compote and light pastry notes. The palate has a plush, ripe and open-knit feel. Drink now." 91 pts, James Suckling
Castello Romitorio Chianti Colli Senesi, 2018: 100% Sangiovese from Tuscany. Deep in colour, this elegant and full body wine has a great balance between fruits (red cherries and red currants) and earthy, leathery notes. This wine is versatile enough to pair with most meats.
Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto, 2016: Raspberry on the nose with dark fruits and pine. Vanilla black olive and dark plum on the palate developing into woody, chocolatey flavours with a lasting finish. An hour in a decanter brings out a wonderful rock-rose perfume.
