Poggio Argentiera, PoggioRaso Cabernet Franc
PoggioRaso is a wine with a strong varietal character. Primary aromas are dominant with a hint of pepper and lovely red fruit. As the years go by, tertiary notes of undergrowth come through. It can certainly age in the bottle for more than 10 years.
Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of the Adua farm, a property which went back to the early 20th century when the Maremma marshes began to be drained, today the winery owns over 50 acres (21 hectares) of vineyards all in the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
Their philosophy combines the work in the vineyard with the utmost respect for the vine and its production cycle and, starting from 2009, the management of the entire Estate has been converted following the principles and practices of organic agricolture and farming, with the objective of researching perfect balance between the vines and the surrounding environment.
"Very fresh and floral aromas here of violets, hyacinths, crushed stones and oyster shell. Despite its flowery, bonhomous appeal, there are some mouth-puckering tannins that coat the mouth in deeply flavored waves of dark fruit. Vivid style. Drink from 2021.94 pts, James Suckling97 pts, Luca Maroni-Annuario Migliori Vini 2021 Deep, pastille fruited nose of fig jam, blueberries, plums and morello cherry, star anise and dark chocolate with graphite, star anise and soy notes. Explosive attack, a morass of super-ripe, juicy black cherries, blackcurrants, blueberries and currants, bounded by enough saline acidity and some chalky tannins that wrestle and succeed in keeping the exuberance in check. Mouthfeel is mostly lateral and expansive with the structural elements holding the finish with a hint of marzipan and blackcurrant. Pure hedonism right now but with the promise of developing more sophisticated secondary characters. Overnight (and a touch cooler) the palate shows more blackberry fruit and tension, is a little more restrained and the tannins are a little grippier in a good way.
