"One of the great wines of Italy."

One of the great wines of Italy… Sassicaia and San Leonardo seem like brothers separated in childhood.” Wine Advocate, December 2014

Surely the most successful Bordeaux blend of Northern Italy.” Jancis Robinson, August 2012

The wines are more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with their balance and purity and (says leading Italian critic Nicolas Belfrage) ‘can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world‘. San Leonardo’s owner Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, a rare example (at the time) of a professionally-trained aristocrat-oenologist, spent time at Tenuta San Guido back in the 1960s and subsequently employed the same legendary consultant, Giacomo Tachis, as Sassicaia for a time.

San Leonardo’s outstanding Bordeaux blend has received ‘Tre Bicchiere’ from Gambero Rosso for an extraordinary fourteen vintages consecutively and was also numbered among the Guide’s ‘Fifty Wines which changed Italy’. Latterly the critics have got on board with great write-ups from Jancis Robinson, The Wall Street Journal (to whom we introduced the estate) and the Wine Advocate giving recent vintages of San Leonardo 94-97 point scores.

"A more hedonistic, cherry and vanilla tobacco nose than usual, then dusky ripe plums, touch of star anise, baking spices, a faint green peppercorn note (Carmenere coming through?) all without moving the glass. Lead and sandalwood, red cherries and currants – the natural sophistication of SL is almost fighting the warmth of the vintage – it’s a battle for the soul of the wine Palate is peppery, savoury, herbaceous and earthy with notes of black olive and rosemary but the fruit is currently more tucked in than the exuberant nose suggests, with a refreshing line of green acidity and straightness to the tannins that keeps the blackcurrants and red plums in line. Over time this will unfurl in to one of the greats…" Tom Harrow, Wine Guru

"I am reluctant to draw too many conclusions from this sample because it has not yet finished its bottle evolution. San Leonardo is notorious for its long aging requirements, even in a warm and accessible vintage such as this. The 2015 San Leonardo will be officially presented at Vinitaly in 2020 (in April) and will hit foreign markets soon after that. From what we can determine now, this is shaping up to be a beautiful wine with deep inner fruit richness and exuberance. In its current state, the wine is lavish and extremely radiant. I am faithful that great results will follow. Stay tuned..." 94 - 97 pts, Monica Larner, WA

"From a palpably riper vintage than the 2014 tasted yesterday but still with San Leonardo's trademark restraint. This is very youthful and clearly has the structure underneath to go quite a distance. Great freshness and bite but not at all skinny. Much more aérienne than the average red bordeaux – on which it was originally modelled. Very long indeed." 17.5 pts, Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar. 95 pts, Eric Guido
