Special Edition All Reds
A case full of our favourite reds from around the world.
Albis Haras de Pirque, 2016: "Powerful and pure-tasting, with plush dark plum, cherry tart and dark currant flavors. Refined and minerally on the finish, with dried mint accents and plenty of chocolaty richness. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere. Drink now through 2025. 150 cases imported." 93 pts, Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator
Villa Gresti di San Leonardo, 2006: This Merlot based cuvée is fully mature and initially quite fragile. Leafy, ferrous, orange peel and tobacco notes around dark forest fruits, a touch pruneaux on the nose. A focussed and lean, savoury palate with marked acidity follows with currants, cacoa nibs, dried cranberry, cedar. This really benefits from an hour or two breathing and is even richer and plusher the following day.
Jane Eyre Fleurie, 2018: Bursting with morello cherry fruit and a note of vanilla and nutmeg, then a whiff of bacon fat and woodsmoke, and more dry spices. The palate has an unexpected florality – violets mostly, and a hit of kirsch backed by peppery tannins. Jane is once again showing how cru Beaujolais needs to be taken seriously.
PerSe Inseparable, 2018: "[...] Savoury aromas on the nose, with intense cassis, notes of cherries, spice and violets. Tightly coiled black fruit and fine-grained tannins on the palate, opening into intense black berry fruit, with juicy cherry notes, spice and savoury/gamey undertones, but with lovely freshness and a mineral backbone. [...]" 95 pts, Julie Sheppard, Decanter
Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto, 2017: Raspberry on the nose with dark fruits and pine. Vanilla black olive and dark plum on the palate developing into woody, chocolatey flavours with a lasting finish. An hour in a decanter brings out a wonderful rock-rose perfume.
Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Rouge, 2017: Plenty of crunchy berries, with a lick of spice, moving to a palate of bright ripe red fruits – plums and raspberries, bound by nicely structured tannins.
