Tollot-Beaut Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru 'Champ Chevrey'
Founded in the 1880s, Tollot-Beaut remains amongst the best value and consistently rewarding growers in the Cote de Beaune. They were one of the first to begin domaine bottling their wines in 1921 and now 24ha strong, helmed by fifth generation Nathalie Tollot, with assistance from her father, uncle and cousins, this remains very much a family affair. Based in Chorey-Le-Beaune, they also have holdings in Aloxe Corton, Savigny and Corton itself (as well as a terrific 1er Cru Beaune ‘Greves’ – one of my favourite hidden gem vineyards). Dependably showing pretty and charming, supple red fruits, the recent solar vintages have shone a light (literally) on the those appellations around the foothills of Corton traditionally known for more rustic styles, and the domaine’s wines have taken on an extra richness and depth, with plusher, more sophisticated and structured tannins. They remain very attractive and attractively priced too.
"Here the brooding nose is also very earthy with its array of spice, cassis and plum liqueur-scented aromas. Like the Lavières, the medium weight flavors possess an ultra-sleek mouth feel as well as lovely delineation that carry over to the slightly firmer if a bit less complex and persistent finale. This moderately robust effort will require at least some patience." 91 pts, Allen Meadows, Burghound
"The 2015 Savigny les Beaune les Champs Chevreys demanded more coaxing from the glass than the Les Lavières, offering more blue fruit here with touches of violet. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, plenty of juicy, fresh blueberry and raspberry fruit with a twist of citrus peel on the finish. It should give a decade's worth of pleasure but be irresistible in its youth." 88-90 pts, Neal Martin, WA
